How every dog encounter works

Carrying the toy limits some actions, so inspect the return path before picking it up. Shift remains important on folded roofs; The Park uses a staged Power Core relay; Underpass requires both gravity movement and a safe way back to the dog.
Do you need to complete the route in order?
No fixed region order is required. Downtown and Central are easy early checks, while West Incursion, Evacuation, The Park, Underpass, and Unknown become more practical as Shift, Reach, and regional access open. The route is not reported as missable, so delayed cleanup is safer than forcing an ability-gated jump.
Why seven dogs can still leave the quest unfinished
The seventh returned toy completes the Manhattan collection, but the reward step happens afterward. Travel to The Gap and interact with the dog there. That final visit completes Every Dog Has Her Day, unlocks the Dog's Best Friend trophy or achievement, and grants the Untapped Trusted Spanner Artifact.
How to diagnose a missing stop
Use the checklist by region, not by memory of seeing the dog. A completed stop includes returning the toy to the bed and finishing the interaction. If all seven zone rows are confirmed but the quest remains open, the missing action is usually the final Gap visit.
